Free Science and Social Studies Videos

Are you looking for a fun way to motivate students to read more nonfiction? Literacy and Math Ideas now has free videos to boost motivation!  I have gotten so much positive feedback about the reading passages in my products.  Now, I have videos to accompany my reading passages.  The newest video is a great introduction to a science unit about plants.

Do you know where your food comes from?  You just might be surprised.  Watch Literacy and Math Ideas' latest video, The Unusual History of Corn

For several years, I have gone into the wild (literally) to get inspiration for my reading passages. My travels around the world have brought me up close to giraffes and up close to wild monkeys.

I also do historical reenactments to get a sense of what life was like long ago.  In the process of studying nature and working with scientists, you can find out some unusual and very interesting things.  My adventures will now be chronicled in short, high-interest videos.  Links to resources will also be available.

Psss... wanta actually USE your computer at center time?

I have a secret... that YOU NEED TO KNOW.

How do you manage a student computer center in your classroom without actually sitting next to a student?
How can you guide their play on set topics, get them to specific activities and videos to play?
Who has time to preselect games and activities and memorize the link anyways?
What do you do when they click off the activity they are on?
ARE YOU Frustrated? Are your students MORE frustrated?
You guys know how much I love technology.
But sometimes we teachers are working too hard and our efforts are not working.
My computer center was leaving me frustrated and my students frustrated.
It is sad to see students choose to "play" something else because waiting on me to help them at the computer was a waste of their time.

"Who Am I?" Inference Task Cards for Primary

Many students are not able to make inferences when reading.  This has been a constant struggle for educators ~ like myself~ and parents to teach.  I was just sitting here thinking (while it is snowing outside).......What are some ways I can contribute to minimizing this problem?  The bulk of making inferences is mostly taught in the higher levels.  I think this skill should be taught in the primary levels, as well.  This skill should not just be introduced in the primary levels, but developed extensively.  Therefore, students would have a lot of exposure to this particular skill by the time they are in the intermediate/higher grade levels.

So, I decided to create a series of inference resources for primary grade levels.  This will ensure many opportunities for primary students to encounter making inferences.  The first inference resource is called ~INFERENCE "WHO AM I?" CARDS~.  This resource is ideally for 1st and 2nd Graders.  You can also use this with Kindergartners by reading the cards a loud and have them guess the answer.  This resource can be used in centers/stations, whole-groups, guided reading groups, etc.

Take a look at a sample below.......
