Common Core ELA Rubrics

This school year, many educators are leaping into the Common Core Standards.  The Common Core rubrics are here to assist you.  Each rubric is specifically aligned to each Common Core ELA Literature and Informational Text Standard.  They are great for measuring progress in learning centers as well as during guided reading.  Add them to student portfolios.  A complete set is for $4.00.  Access a link below.

Create Striking Videos with Animoto

Animoto is an engaging video presentation tool students can use to demonstrate their knowledge on virtually any topic.  Whether students love to perform in front of the camera themselves or prefer to use images and video from Animoto's wide selection, students can create eye-catching and informative videos within minutes.

Another advantage of Animoto is the fact that there is no longer a need to purchase expensive equipment and software to create great looking videos with your students.  Using pictures, video clips and music, Animoto's simple interface allows students to create engaging educational videos in no time.

How to Get Started:

Click on the link below to access Animoto's Helpdesk.  There you will find an excellent video and screenshot tutorial to help you and your students get started.

NOTE: Educators with an Animoto account already can apply for an upgraded AnimotoPlus account which allow students to create full length videos rather than the free 30 second clips.  It is important to note that it may take a couple of weeks to receive the Animoto Code.

Sample Classroom Activites:

1.  Geography - Below is an introductory video on ecosystems and biomes I used for my Social Studies 10 class to demonstrate the expectations of this assignment.

Sample Ecosystems & Biomes Video

2.  Extracurricular Wind-up Video - After learning about Animoto in our class, a former student of mine created a video about his rugby team's playoff run.  I have also used Animoto to sum up my basketball team's season.

3.  Demonstration tool - use Animoto to breakdown step by step a sport skill or how to properly conduct a science experiment or cooking technique.

NOTE: It is important students are taught copyright guidelines especially in regards to music selection.  Please refer to my previous post for details - Creative Commons, Copyright & You.

I am positive student engagement and motivation will be high when creating videos using Animoto.  Click here to give it a try!

Acorns Keep Falling on my Head!

Acorns keep falling on my head!  Really!  Our oak trees are dropping acorns like a rainstorm.  Ouch!  But, kind of like Newton and his apple, those pecks on the head inspired me to create some acorn centers.

One of the centers I made is Acorn Patterns.  There are 2 sizes of acorns and each size points in 4 different directions.  By providing that number of variables, it will be easy to differentiate instruction for my students. They can make a simple a-b-a-b pattern with sizes. Or, I can challenge my G/T students to create something far more complex.

You can grab a copy of my Acorn Pattern math center at Google Docs.

In addition to the math center, I made 3 literacy centers: Collecting Acorns (compound word match), Acorn Contractions, and Acorns & Leaves (long vowel sort). If you like the patterning center, and I hope you do, you can get the whole set on TpT.

I'd love it if you would follow me on:

Golfing for Tens

Sometimes I amaze myself by how I keep thinking of school, even when they have a day off!  I took a day on Thursday because I had 3 medical appointments.  (I'm fine, just scheduled them all on the same day for convenience!)

I had some time to kill between doctor's appointments and so I stopped by the local Dollar Store.  My students need to start adding more than just single digits, so I thought I'd find a fun way for them to work on adding tens. Come on over to Elementary Matters to find out more about how my "Golfing for Tens" center came to be!
