Nonsense Words

Decoding can be a hard skill for some early readers.  Every year I inevitable have at least 1 student who continuously guess words instead of trying to decode.  Sometimes it makes sense; sometimes it doesn't.  Some other readers use a little more skill and may combine context or picture clues with initial sounds to come up with a possible, but incorrect word.

I've created this free nonsense word activity that can be used in small group, RTI, or at a center for your students to practice decoding skills.

Students can place cards on the workmats that feature, basic phonemes, blends, digraphs, diphthongs, and word families into the boxes on the workmat to create nonsense words.  Then it's time to decode!

The workmats start with 2 sounds and increase in number of sounds.  Students love the challenge of the longer nonsense words!

You can get "Mixing Up Nonsense Words" from TPT or Teachers Notebook.
