Independent Reading Center with Reading Journals

One of my favorite addition to an Independent Reading Centers is my Reading Response Journal.  It includes 36 weekly reading response prompts to allow students to demonstrate comprehension and ability to apply reading strategies via a writing prompt. After reading independently, students can respond in their journals, leave their journals in the bin, and provide me with a chance to confer with them later.  Each page even comes equipped with it's own teacher grading rubric, which helps me when it comes conference time.
